Hi,
a new version of the NIS client programs is available on
ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/linux/local/yp/yp-clients-1.5.tar.gz. This
is mainly a bugfix release. yppasswd now works (thanks to all of you
who pointed out the error).

This implementation of NIS clients for linux is based on the YP stuff
for NetBSD from Theo de Raadt.

What is it for?
Whith these files you will be able to set up your linux-box as a NIS
client for /etc/passwd and /etc/group, so you can easily integrate
your linux-box into a network of, say, SUN-workstations without
duplicating entries in the password files. It works best together with
libc-4.6.27, which supports netgroups and contains a lot of bugfixes
to the NIS routines.

What does it lack?
There is no server functionality (aka ypserv). If you don't use YP
already, you probably should not start it :-). If you are nonetheless
looking for a server, look on ftp://ftp.lysator.liu.se/pub/NYS.
The documentation is very rudimentary. Please feel free to contribute.

What is the future?
I do not intend to add functionality to NIS. Bugfixes are welcome. But
if you intend to contribute work for better functionality (e.g. NIS+),
you should support the NYS project (contact Peter Eriksson
<pen@signum.se> for more information). The advantage of the NIS port
as of today is, it does not require recompilation of your
applications and it supports netgroups.
